But the best part of their visit was that two big items just walked out our door! No, they didn't steal our TV's or anything, but a bean bag chair and a large space ball just found new homes.
I'm the type of person who gets rid of stuff as soon as it's not useful. It drives my husband crazy because he's the type of person who thinks "I might be able to use this someday." Our house is small, so I don't like anything hanging around that I can't use right now. I give it away or sell it. I have even ended up bringing a similar item back into the house six months or a year later, it doesn't matter, I didn't need it right then and it was in my way.
One of my favorite things in this world, is the free pile I occasionally put in front of my house. We live near a busy road so if we put stuff out with a big "free" sign in front of it, it inevitably disappears. I love this pile because it's amazing what people will take; although, I often have good quality stuff in my free pile. I also like to try and catch the people who get my stuff. I don't go talk to them or anything, I just like to see what they look like. It's also fun to see people with small cars stuff big items in their cars. Most of the time I miss seeing the people. I'll check on the stuff for hours, and the ten minutes I turn my back are the ten minutes it takes people to get my stuff. I did recently talk to some guys who brought a truck and took all the stuff: broken lawn mower, broken bikes, an old step stool. They told me they always drive by our house because they know we clean out every few months. I didn't know whether to feel proud or embarassed.
My husband wants me to put stuff on ebay, but I don't get how to work ebay and I don't really want to take the time to figure it out, wait for the sale to end, pack it up and ship it. I could finish a lot of projects or take a nap while I'm messing with the ebay maze.
I do Goodwill a lot too. I found that I actually make more money writing the donations off on my taxes than having a garage sale. Not to mention the time and effort it takes to put on a garage sale. I'm also a garage sale drop out. I seem to always have garage sales on days when people are busy and no one comes. Other people seem to know when to have garage sales because all the garage sales seem to be on the same weekend. When I decide to have a garage sale, I always miss the boat, no one comes, no one else in the whole city is having a garage sale, and I end up packing it all up and going to Goodwill anyway.
So today was a good day. Two large items left my house. One was even paid for which will make my husband happy. Now, there is a closet I've been itching to clean out. This is good, because my free pile is hungry for some action.
