But I don't understand how it can be so dead then be a foot tall in two or three weeks. The timing of this time of year is crucial because if I don't get out there in the one day of the week it isn't raining, I've missed my window of opportunity for maybe several weeks. If I miss my window of opportunity and it starts raining for another week, then the grass will have grown another foot.
The lawn mower does not easily go through long, wet grass. So I have to cut it long, wait until the sun dries it more then lower the lawn mower and cut it again. I'm beginning to think laying fake grass across the yard would be a great idea. Think of the plastic between your toes. Think of the comforting rustle of man-made fiber as you walk across the lawn. I could start selling fresh-cut grass scented spray to give your back yard that freshly mowed smell. Or maybe candles or oil for the tiki torches you'd have to stand up with cement blocks because you can't make a hole in the lawn. Aah! I can see it now.
When the kids were little we'd avoid cutting the lawn as long as we could after winter ended. When the children headed for the play set and they'd disappear, we knew it was time for the first spring cutting. Usually I mow the lawn. When we bought this house we bought a shop with a house next to it. My husband looked around the yard and was prepared to cement it over to accommodate a bigger shop and more cars. I told him I would take care of the yard, as if I were asking if I could keep a pet I just drug home.
It is fall now and soon the grass will quit growing fast and I won't have to worry about it until spring. My kids are much too tall to lose in the yard , so I'll have to send out the dogs. If they don't come back in an hour, I'll know it's spring.
