I turned it off, then on and it told me it had a master boot error. So I turned it off and on again with the same result. I called my local PC crisis center and they were open on that Sunday after Christmas.
Not that it couldn't have waited until today, but I just wanted to think it was "at the doctor" and would recover today, so I took it down there and dropped it off.
The guy at the crisis center had hope for it because it hadn't been acting weird until it crashed. He said it could have even been the evil movie making software I loaded. I then confessed all my sins about all the things I did when I was trying to load the movie making software. He absolved me and my penance will be around $120.
The biggest kicker of it is I had just finished transferring all my writing from my little netbook onto my PC and deleting all the files from my netbook. I will now do some virtual "dumpster diving" and see if my files are living in the trash still so I can continue on my quest.
Some may think it is a bad omen to the new year to start it with a major computer crash. But, hear-ye one and all, it is not the end of the year yet and I am simply chasing out the remaining cobwebs of 2010.
2011 is going to be great. And now, I have some dumpster diving to do.
