I don't know why they insist on visiting this summer when I've never had a problem with them before. The yard waste/compost bin gets picked up today and I had some user's guilt and decided I should put some yard waste in the bin. It doesn't take care of the maggots, they run when the sun comes out, but I am paying good money to have the bin to put my compost and yard waste in, I should probably put yard waste in it too. So I cut back a large thistle plant that takes up a lot of space in the bin and trimmed my large Japanese Maple that also takes up a lot of space.
Maybe I didn't have maggots in the past because it always had yard waste in the bin. I don't put my grass clippings in the bin, I just put weeds in there. It hasn't been a very productive gardening summer for me this year. I'm usually better at getting through the whole garden at least once. But this summer I just haven't been compelled to do it.
I can't even say it's been the weather, because up until this last week or two the weather has been unusually cool. I loved it, not that it got me out into the garden.
I guess I've been trying to decide what the front yard should become. Up until we extended the patio last summer we used to go out front all the time. I have a table out there with an awning that extends from the house to a trellis in the garden. But since we have the nice cool patio to sit on, we never sit out front. I just enjoy the garden on my way out the door and on my way back in.
It seems a shame and lately I've been thinking I should move my garden to the back. But it's a very established garden and I'd probably kill most everything if I tried to move it. Besides, then what would I do with the front? I couldn't just leave it with a bunch of plants yanked out.
So then I was thinking I should plant more plants and really cram it full and take over what little lawn is left in the middle. Then it would just be one big jungle of garden and I could just sit on the front porch and enjoy it while drinking a refreshing beverage once in a while. It would have to be crammed full of low maintenance plants though. Then I could create an arboretum in the backyard and my life would be complete. HA!
I was standing outside a little while ago talking to my neighbor. We were pointing in our gardens and talking about all the things we need to get done in them. We kept walking back and forth comparing our workloads.
We decided it was much easier to talk about how much we had to do than to actually do it.
